11 Easy Steps to App Store Optimization (ASO)

Got an app? If so, you’re probably concerned about people finding and downloading your app, just like you’re concerned about people finding and downloading content on your website. This concern is real – attention rates are plummeting simultaneously with the constant bombardment of information and resulting content overload. 

How Can I Get My App Found…& Downloaded

ASO, aka app store optimization, is a process focused on improving and expanding the visibility of an app. Take a look at your app store, whether Google Play for Android or the App Store for Apple…. what do you see? Titles, graphics, ratings, reviews, etc.? Which are you most likely to show interest in or download? My guess is the one with the most ratings, best reviews, the one that looks well put together, and has a title that coincides with what you are searching for. ASO is about visibility because high visibility = more downloads.

Get higher visibility and entice audiences to download your app by following these steps to app store optimization:

Step 1: Be descriptive with titles

Make sure the title describes the app appropriately. When choosing a title, use a keyword or keyword phrase with heavy search traffic. Keep up to date with the keywords that are performing well. 

Step 2: Describe the app in detail

Be thorough when describing the app and its functions; people enjoy knowing what they are getting. Having the information where users can see answers to questions they may have can be a key to success. Make the app as user friendly as possible.

Step 3: Use Keywords

Use keywords and use them wisely! Research which keywords are performing best with the app and with competitors apps. Use analytics tracking to stay current with performance. 

Step 4: Choose the right app category

Choose the correct category for the app. Make your app easy to find by putting it in the most relevant category. 

Step 5: Use high quality photos

When adding images, make sure they are high quality and add photos that give the best first impression of the app.

Step 6: Add a preview video

A sure way to entice users is to include a video showcasing the app’s features and key benefits.

Step 7: Icon design is important

The icon is the first impression when it comes to apps. The app icon should sell the app!

Step 8: Positive reviews create success

Encourage reviews for the app. Learn from your own experiences. We are all users and have likes and dislikes while interacting with an app. Reviews in general are difficult to control, however there are many ways to incentivize users to rate and/or review, especially those users who use the app regularly and would have something positive to say.

Step 9: Don’t forget to measure and test

As mentioned before with keywords, analytics is a sure-fire way to see how your app is performing. Analytics gives you the luxury of comparing date ranges, seeing actual numbers, and helping you see insights on how to improve functionality within the app. 

Step 10: Ensure your app is user friendly

Making the app user friendly is crucial to success. Simplify, break things down, and look at it from a user perspective when addressing any issues.

Step 11: Learn and re-evaluate

Regularly re-evaluate the app to see if your title, keywords, photos, videos…etc. are all up to par. Re-evaluate the app as a user as well as a creator, to provide the best service to your users.
